‘The two men stood at the locked gate calling for an officer who had already left,’ said the eyewitness.

‘Zulu emerged from the guard room and approached the gate to inform them that the man they were looking for had already left.’

Zululand Police Cluster spokesperson, Captain Nkosie Gwala, said Zulu suffered multiple gunshots wounds to his chest, legs and left upper arm.

‘He was rushed to the Enhlekisa Clinic by someone in a private car before the arrival of the police.’

Gwala said police found him at the clinic, from where he was transferred to Benedictine Hospital under police escort.

‘There he was stabilised before being transferred to Ngwelezana Hospital.’

Gwala said police recovered 15 empty 9mm cartridges at the scene.

The motive for the attack is unclear and nothing was taken from the victim.
