Tired of waiting in line? Apply for your driver’s licence online

The online application system will be up and running by September

SOUTH AFRICANS will soon be able to renew and apply for their learner and driver’s licences online.

According to the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC), the online service, which it says will put an end to corruption at licensing departments, will be rolled out next month.

‘In September we will start rolling out the system in Gauteng and then throughout the country,’ RTMC’s Simon Zwane said

The system will allow learner and driver’s licence applicants to choose the date, time and place of their test.

It will also allow people to renew their licences as well.

Zwane said the online system will root out corruption.

‘We have evidence of, for example, bookings being blocked for certain individual purposes that are corrupt.

‘We will deal with that and improve services to the public.’

Renewal of driver’s licences

The government stipulates that one must renew one’s driver’s licence card four weeks before its expiry date.

If one renews it after the expiry date, one will have to apply for a temporary driver’s licence at an additional cost while waiting for one’s licence to be issued.

The current cost for renewal is R250.

It is also important to note that when renewing once’s licence, one will not be required to take a driving test.

Only an eye test is required and one’s fingerprints will be taken.

Alternatively, one can have one’s eyes tested by an optometrist and submit the results at the testing centre.

If one’s sight has worsened from the date on which your licence was issued, new conditions will be attached to your licence.
