THE last day of school for St Catherine’s Headgirl Kate Dalais will be a day she will not forget.
On Wednesday 5 December Kate was surprised by SPAR Advertising and Sponsorship Manager Justin Harris – and was named the Spar Superstar of the Year.
The bright young lady received this award for her holistic approach to her school career, excelling in her academics, participating in sport and involved in social and community projects.
Every month SPAR has been selecting a SPAR Superstar from a primary school and a high school. These pupils were given a R250 voucher for their achievements and contributions in class, on the field and to the community.
Each winner was entered into the final and Kate came out on top in the high school category.
She was handed an iPad mini, an apple iPod as well as a lovely basket of edibles which she will be able to enjoy now that her final exams are finished.
Samkelo the primary star
Samkelo Zwane, a 12-year-old Grade 7 pupil at John Wesley School in Pinetown, was chosen as the overall SPAR Star for 2013 in the primary school category.
Samkelo entered the school at the beginning of this year and has displayed maturity and determination beyond his years in his approach to all areas of school life, including learning to swim in the first term – having never done so before.
He achieved 100 percent for physical education this term, among other noteworthy achievements.
Samkelo, despite suffering from asthma, played for both the 1st and 2nd soccer teams and was part of the team which brought home the winning trophy in a 5-a-side schools soccer tournament.
He swam, played hockey and, in his final term at John Wesley, he took part in cricket, touch rugby and basketball.
His ambition is to study to become a primary school teacher.
Samkelo was overwhelmed with joy and tears filled his eyes when he was handed R10 000 for his school, and was personally awarded an iPad mini, an iPod shuffle and a hamper of sweets for being this year’s overall SPAR Star in the primary school category.
