‘I am the flag’ campaign launched

'We remember who we are and there is no better way than the flag of South Africa.'

ARTS and Culture Minister Nathi Mthethwa on Friday launched the ‘I am the flag’ campaign to promote national consciousness, social cohesion, nation building and patriotism for all citizens of South Africa.

The campaign, in partnership with South African National Taxi Association (SANTACO), was launched at Randburg Taxi Rank, in Johannesburg.

It entails distribution of flyers, handheld flags, passports, mirror socks, and other promotional materials to taxi drivers, vendors, commuters and to general masses to mobilise ordinary South Africans around the campaign.

‘We remember who we are and there is no better way than the flag of South Africa. It symbolises unity, diversity and our pride as a nation. We should respect our flag, we should popularise our flag, and it should be everywhere we are,’ Minister Mthethwa said.

Department Director-General, Vusumuzi Mkhize said the campaign seeks to educate people who believe the flag does not represent them.

‘This is the new democratic dispensation and many people need to understand what this flag stands for. We need to change that and say to people: ‘you are the flag’.

‘It’s your values. It represents our struggles for liberation. It represents your aspirations for a better South Africa,’ he said.

The department is encouraging corporates, civic organisations, NGOs, celebrities and the general public to embrace the campaign and to creatively come up with their own plans in support of this national call.
