Condolences pour in for late jazz legend Nhlanhla Thusi
City of uMhlathuze Mayor Mduduzi Mhlongo sent his condolences to the family
TRIBUTES are still pouring in from all walks of life for South Africa’s jazz musician and academic, Dr Nhlanhla Brian Thusi, who passed away at St Augustine’s Hospital in Durban on Tuesday night.
City of uMhlathuze Mayor Mduduzi Mhlongo sent his condolences to the family.
‘We are saddened by the passing of bab’ Thusi. Little did we know that his outstanding performance in our city on Saturday would be his own artistic way of saying goodbye to us.
‘May his family, friends and relatives find comfort in God and may his soul rest in eternal peace,‘ said Mhlongo.
Thusi was born in the Umlazi township in Durban in 1952 and started playing brass instruments at the age of 10.
He was introduced to jazz by the late SD Ngcobo, a principal at Ohlange High School in Inanda. He played trumpet for the school jazz group, then played flugelhorn, trombone and harmonica.
He played with leading musos such as Khaya Mahlangu, Donald Diaz, Sipho Mvusi, Seth Twala and GTX Xaba.
He toured internationally and performed in, among others, Europe, America, Africa, United Arab Emirates, Norway, Japan, and Australia.
He played with the KZN Philharmonic Orchestra, Namibia’s National Symphony Orchestra, Haringey Youth Orchestra (London) and North West Chamber Orchestra.
He also led the University of KZN’s jazz band at the Hanover World Expo 2000 event in Germany.
