Mondi Richards Bay spreads some Madiba magic

Zululand charities benefit from Mondi outreach

Mondi Richards Bay mill staff spent 67 minutes on Mandela Day at the Sinalo Cerebral Palsy Centre in Esikhawini J2.

The centre is a non-profit organisation that aims to meet the ever-changing needs of children with Cerebral Palsy in northern KwaZulu-Natal.

It started with eight children and currently cares for a total of 18 children.

Twelve of the children are boarders, while six are day scholars.

The main goal of the Cerebral Palsy Centre is to provide specialised programmes to ensure the overall physical, social, emotional and intellectual support of the children. It also supports and strengthens families in a way that promotes optimal development of the child.

Corporate Social Investment Manager at Mondi Richards Bay, Hlengiwe Mvubu said:

We spent 67 minutes on International Mandela Day with the children at the Sinalo home.

Many families struggle to raise and care for children with cerebral palsy, whilst some of the children are often neglected because our society doesn’t understand their condition and the nurturing that’s required to enable optimal development.

Our late icon, Dr Nelson Mandela, loved and cared for children, and this is our way of contributing to his legacy and making a positive impact in their lives.

The Mondi team brought joy to the children and the centre staff by donating a variety of items to keep the children and the home warm this winter.

Mondi helps the Mandlanzini senior citizens take action against poverty

In an effort to empower senior citizens to take action against poverty and improve their wellness, Mondi Richards Bay mill donated various agricultural tools to the senior citizens of Mandlazini.

The initiative was part of commemorating International Nelson Mandela Day on 18 July.

Thirty senior citizens received agricultural tools such as garden hoes, seeds, watering cans and pesticides.

The handover was held at the Mandlanzini Community Centre, where a further 30 senior citizens received blankets to keep them warm this winter.

Corporate Social Investment Manager at Mondi Richards Bay, Hlengiwe Mvubu, said:

This community project aims to address food security, and ensure the community is able to produce their own healthy food, which in turn will contribute to optimal nutrition for senior citizens.

If their yields are high, they will also be able to generate an income by selling the extra produce to the surrounding communities and local shops.
