Pongola Mayor speaks out against social ills

Nhlabathi was speaking at a mass community prayer event at the Ntuthuko sports grounds on Sunday ahead of the provincial Legislature sitting and Youth Parliament

PONGOLA Mayor Winnie Nhlabathi believes the increase in drug abuse in the Ntuthuko area is because of the area’s close proximity to the Swaziland border.

‘Drug traffickers use the border to smuggle their wares and the youth of Ward 12 have been badly affected by this,’ she said.

Nhlabathi was speaking at a mass community prayer event at the Ntuthuko sports grounds on Sunday ahead of the provincial Legislature sitting and Youth Parliament.

She confirmed that the South African police and National Defense Force have been assisting by patrolling the area since the beginning of the year

‘We chose to bring the prayer service here so that the community and relevant stakeholders will become more informed about the social ills affecting the community.

‘I received complaints from the public that there is an increase of crime in this area, something we need to address.’

She also revealed that SETA learnership programmes will be used to help equip unemployed youth with various skills.
