Youth challenged to become self-sufficient

THE head of the Mhlana Traditional Authority, also known as KwaMthethwa, iNkosi MV Mthethwa has appealed to young people to do something constructive that will change their socio-economic status, such as establishing cooperatives.
iNkosi Mthethwa was speaking during a sod turning ceremony for the Thuthuka Joe86 Agricultural Primary Cooperative held last week at Mpemvu Reserve under the uMfolozi Municipality.
He said it was time for young people to rise up and do things for themselves, instead of waiting for government intervention.
‘We can’t continue using government as a shield for our failures. The reality is that young people are not meeting the government halfway.
‘We have the ability to do things for ourselves, such as registering cooperatives which would in turn result in the job creation.
‘As traditional leaders we remain instrumental in unlocking rural development and employment opportunities. We have the land which our youth should be using to develop themselves and their families.
‘I’m happy that we are launching this poultry farming project today, founded by young people, with the hope that they will take it to greater heights.
‘More than 52% of South Africa’s youth remain jobless and we have to change this situation,’ he said.
