Two life sentences for KZN taxi driver for raping and killing 12-month-old baby

Double life sentence - plus an addition ten years - for rapist guilty of 'monstrous act'

ON Tuesday (yesterday) the Johannesburg High Court sentenced a 29-year-old taxi driver to two life sentences, plus an addition ten years, for raping and murdering a 12-month old baby girl in Tembisa in 2015.

Handing down the sentence, Judge Bashier Vally said the way the crimes were committed showed that the man had no regard for the baby.

‘Raping the baby and leaving her to die in a field was an act of brutality brutal,’ said Judge Vally.

He will only be eligible for parole in 25 years.

The South African National Civic Organisation (SANCO) lauded the sentencing, saying it was a ‘fitting sentence’ for a ‘monstrous act’.

‘Children will be safer with the removal of this man from society and we hope it will serve as a deterrent to perpetrators of sexual violence against children,’ said the statement.

‘Child rape is a ghastly act with long-term psychological effects and an abominable scourge against society.

‘The inclusion of the name of the perpetrator in the National Register for Sexual Offenders and maximum sentence should restore the confidence of our communities in the criminal justice system.’
