Groenewald and Douglass take bowls crown

Thirty-two bowlers entered the champs

LUKAS Groenewald and Jane Douglass were crowned Richards Bay Bowls Club drawn mixed pairs champions after dominating the finals by seven shots.

Thirty-two bowlers entered the championships and were treated to sunny weather and well-groomed greens.

Sunday’s action saw two semi-final games between Brian Scott and Essel Schoeman taking on Gordon Gullen and Gayle Shaw, with Groenewald and Douglass taking on Joey Evans and Frank Hughes.

Scott and Schoeman won 25-2, with with Groenewald and Douglass earning a finals spot with an 18-11 win.

The final played over 15 ends certainly did not disappoint, with good competitive bowls being played.

Scott and Schoeman opened a lead of 6 – 3 after the fifth end, but their opponents played steady bowls and after the tenth end opened a lead of seven shots (13-6).

Scott and Schoeman tried everything possible to get back into the game, but could not make up the deficit as Groenewald and Douglass went on to win 18-11.
