A POLICE officer, who sustained gunshot injuries to the head, is recovering in hospital following a shootout near KwaMbonambi on Thursday evening.
The incident occurred during an operation conducted by KwaMsane Tactical Response Team (TRT) and Kwambonambi SAPS.
Reports indicate that police went to eNseleni township, searching for a suspect involved in a house robbery and rape incident that occurred in June 2017 at Nozambula reserve in KwaMbonambi.
When police pounced on the suspect he opened fire, wounding the police officer (40).
The 65-year-old suspect was also shot and taken to hospital under police guard.
He will be charged for attempted murder and will appear in the Empangeni Magistrate’s Court.
