Life sentence for Unizulu student’s killer

A written statement by Mncube read out in court by his legal aid representative, confirmed his involvement in Khuzwayo's murder

PHAIZEL Mncube (37), who earlier this year confessed to the murder of University of Zululand (Unizulu) student Sikhulile Khuzwayo (22), was on Friday sentenced to life imprisonment.

The matter which had previously been heard at the Ngwelezana Magistrate’s Court, was recently moved to the Pietermaritzburg High Court for judgement.

A written statement by Mncube read out in court by his legal aid representative, confirmed his involvement in Khuzwayo’s murder, and it was made known to the court that he would maintain his guilty plea.

The statement further noted he was remorseful for his actions, asking the court to be merciful when handing down judgement.
