UNIVERSITY of Zululand fullback Sihle Mhlamvu certainly had a memorable outing against Empangeni in a Stewart Shield encounter at Mick Kelly Park on Friday night.
The talented utility back scored 17 points after scoring a hat-trick of tries and nailing a conversion, and also impressed with his slick handling skills, bursts of speed and field positioning which rightfully earned him the Man of the Match award.
The students were firing on all cylinders, dominating set pieces and possession which resulted in a comprehensive 41-0 victory.
Mhlamvu dotted down early and kicked the conversion to open his side’s account.
Moments later Siyabonga Nkabinde crashed over the whitewash, with scrumhalf Philip Otuo-Acheampong converting (14-0).
Just before the half-time hooter, Mhlamvu found his way to the line to pick up his second for the night (19-0).
The students regrouped at half-time and came out to record a further 22 points in the second half.
Hooker Mthobisi Kunene was the first player to dot down for the students in the second half, which was not converted.
Flyhalf Siphamandla Ndlangamandla then found his way to the whitewash, with Otuo-Acheampong nailing the conversion.
As play went on and the Unizul players continued to play a running game and attack the gain line, it was only a matter of time before the Empangeni defensive structures were going to crack yet again.
This resulted in two further tries from Siyanda Masinga and Mhlamvu.
