Zululand athletes shine at Two Oceans in Cape Town
The race which is globally known as 'the world's most beautiful marathon' is run against a backdrop of spectacular scenery through the Cape Peninsula.Both races start in Newlands
ZULULAND was well represented at the popular annual Two Oceans Marathon held over the Easter weekend in Cape Town, with 11 clubs and 73 athletes completing the 56km and 21km routes.
The race which is globally known as ‘the world’s most beautiful marathon’ is run against a backdrop of spectacular scenery through the Cape Peninsula.Both races start in Newlands.
The Ultra Marathon follows a more or less circular route through Muizenberg, Fish Hoek, over Chapman’s Peak, through Hout Bay and Constantia Nek, and eventually finishes at the University of Cape Town campus.
The half marathon takes runners along Edinburgh Drive, before turning into forest roads past Kirstenbosch (where runners meet up with Ultra Marathon participants) and finishes up at the University of Cape Town campus.
Pongola Athletics Club was represented by Lizwi Mkhwanazi who crossed the finish line of the ultra marathon in 4 hours, 37 minutes and 8 seconds, with Unizul runner Elijah Mantshi finishing in 4.29.50.
Thirteen runners competed from the Zululand Multi Sports Club over both distances with Lizanne Scholtz clocking the fastest club time in 4.59.18.
uMhlathuze Athletics Club had 13 athletes completing both distances with Bongani Mbuyazi finishing in 4.36.13.
NRB Harriers had the most entries from all Zululand club’s with 20 and the fastest local time with Bongani Mdletshe clocking 3.44.38.
Mtunzini Athletics Club had four runners with Robert Hatton-Jones finishing in 5.42.04 and the only Mtubatuba Athletics Club runner Malibongwe Mathenjwa crossing the line in 6.02.15.
Nkosinomusa Biyela was the first of seven runners home in 5.52.12 for Mondi Athletics Club.
Both Empangeni and eSikhaleni Athletics Club had two entrants, with Jabulani Gumbi (4.45.46) and Zibongele Xulu (4.35.31) being the first runners home for their respective clubs.
Mandeni Harriers had nine runners completing both distances with Sithembiso Ntuli clocking the fastest time in 4.49.25.
Athletes will be eyeing the Tronox Marathon which will be hosted by the uMhlathuze Athletics Club on 29 April at Addison Park.
