Jozini community educated about rights
Thousands of community members across all 20 wards in the Jozini Municipality gathered at Mfingosi Community Hall under the Nyawo Tribal Council on Friday
IN an attempt to stop the unnecessary and violent protests in Jozini, the municipality has come up with a plan to educate the residents about their rights.
Thousands of community members across all 20 wards in the Jozini Municipality gathered at Mfingosi Community Hall under the Nyawo Tribal Council on Friday.
Prosecuting authorities and gender equality representatives were among those invited to attend and help educate the residents about the law.
Jozini Mayor Delani Mabika said copies of the Constitution were distributed among communities to ensure people know where their rights start and to avoid infringing on others’ constitutional rights.
‘A well-informed community lives in harmony and that will help us attract investors to create job opportunities for our people.
‘We are not trying to silence people who demand service delivery. We know that there is a 40 percent backlog in electricity installations, but together with the uMkhanyakude District we are working on it.
‘We also know that there are people who desperately need houses as most of them are living in mud structures.
Together with the Department of Human Settlement we are also addressing that issue.
‘On the issue of water challenges in the area, we are working with the uMkhanyakude District Municipality to find solutions,’ Mabika said.
He added that most citizens find themselves in protest marches, not realising that they are being used by opportunists.
Referring to the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP), which is used to reduce the unemployment rate, the mayor said it is a one-year rotational programme among beneficiaries.
