Plan of action for Veldenvlei cats

Some of the cats have been booked in to be sterilised and others have been re-homed

FOLLOWING a recent municipal clampdown, the Veldenvlei ‘cat lady’ has taken proactive measures to ensure her cats do not become a menace to all.

After receiving an order from the municipal by-law enforcer to get rid of all but two of the 20 cats on her premises, Veldenvlei resident Sindy Maritz has given away two and is being assisted by Project Feral Cat (PFC) to sterilise the others before finding homes for them.

Not all 20 cats live on the premises permanently, some are feral and live in the neighbouring greenbelt, visiting the property at meal times and to shelter from bad weather.

‘This is the reason we are assisting, as it is our aim to stabilise and control the numbers of feral cats in our community,’ said Heilke Ackerman, founder of Project Feral Cat.

‘While keeping feral cat colonies under control is imperative because of the frequency with which they breed, cats do play a role in controlling rodent populations and diseases that come with rats and mice.’

Three females will today (Thursday) be sterilised at Meerensee Veterinary Practice and the rest, which are mostly males or too young to be sterilised, will be done by the State Vet and when they are older.

‘We are very grateful to Dr Pierre Singery and his team at Meerensee Vet who are always willing to help PFC,’ said Ackerman.

The cats are of varying ages and if anyone would like to adopt one, they can contact Lise de Jager, a tenant on the property, on 071 4653144.
