INSPIRED by Dover Combined School’s matric performance, member of the KZN Legislature, Bheki Ntuli visited the school to pledge his support and offered to adopt the school as his own.
Ntuli, a former teacher himself, said he was inspired by the school’s turnaround strategy, saying he would be happy to see the school totally reclaiming its past glory.
‘This school has been very close to my heart and I have a long history with it, dating from the days when my son used to attend here.
‘He will be graduating with a degree in civil engineering,’ said Ntuli.
‘I understand that it has not been an easy journey. You have had challenges on the way, but with such performance displayed by both teachers and learners, there is no reason why we as government cannot associate ourselves with such a school,’ he said.
Dover recorded a 95% pass rate in last year’s matric results and the year before that scored in the region of 70%.
Ntuli had a special word for this year’s matriculants.
‘Anyone of you who will excel to the level of a B symbol, will walk away with a computer laptop, even if you are 10 in total.
‘I will ensure that you all receive your laptops, which you can use at a tertiary institution,’ he said.
He also donated school uniforms and shoes and promised to provide painting for the school buildings.
Ntuli, who has served as a University of Zululand Council Chairman was accompanied by King Cetshwayo District Director David Chonco, Ukhozi FM motivational speaker Pastor Thomas Hadebe, Fundiswa Xaba of Fundiswa Foundation and prominent businessman Muzi Ngema.
In his message of support, Chonco said he was convinced that Dover had turned the corner, saying there was one direction for the school – upward.
‘The community members, School Governing Body and cooperate business have come together with one goal of helping learners to do better.
‘I see no reason why the school can’t reach 100% in this year’s matric exams,’ he said.
School principal, Wonderboy Mzobe said the onus was now on them to deliver.
‘We are aiming for 100%, but if that fails, we won’t go less than 90%,’ he said.Speaking on behalf of the newly elected School Governing Body, Wiseman Mthiyane appealed to learners to focus all their energies on school work and listen to their teachers.
