There was not a dry eye in the house when Dance Academy’s Fantasyland 2013 opened last week.
The annual show has been going for almost 30 years and was under the guidance of the late Carolyn Frara.
This year, the show was produced and directed by Kim van der Merwe and the dances were a combined effort by several dancers in the studio.
The show opened with a slide show tribute to Carolyn Frara highlighting her passion and dedication to the academy.
With three acts, it was mind-blowing to see the quick changes, fast-paced steps and glamorous costumes.
From young to old, the show boasted various styles of dance including hip-hop, classical and contemporary.
A highlight in the first act was when Carolyn’s daughter, Vanessa Marx came out dressed in a glittery red top, leather pants and strutted to Rihanna’s ‘Umbrella’.
‘Back-up’ dancers were parents from the dance academy, wearing top hats and tails. It was all so very stylish.
And what year-end show would be complete without a few festive tunes.
Dancers concluded the evening with ‘Santa Baby’, ‘Merry Xmas’ and ‘Oh Santa’ to a roaring applause from the audience.
