Taxi bosses set the record straight

After a series of complains regarding eSikhaleni taxi routes and poor driver attitudes, taxi bosses speak out

FOLLOWING complaints by eSikhaleni commuters, taxi bosses have set the record straight on how routes operate.

Last week frustrated commuters voiced their unhappiness over the local route.

In a letter to the Zululand Observer, passengers said moving from one section to another has become a nightmare

‘Taxis refuse to drop us at our sections and end the route at the shopping mall. If you are from the J1 section and want to get to H2, you now have to take two taxis as they all end their routes at the shopping mall

‘The original fare was R5, but now we have to pay R10 instead,’ said the letter.

‘What makes matters worse is that drivers become rude when we ask them to drop us at our sections, as was the case previously.’

Commuters also complained about drivers’ attitudes.

‘They use vulgar language to pensioners and treat us like dirt. It’s not fair. Drivers need to be taught the rules and treat their customers with respect.’

Response

On behalf of the eSikhawini Taxi Association, disciplinary committee representative Mduduzi Mbonambi said poor treatment of commuters was not welcomed by the association and drivers found guilty would be dealt with.

He said drivers operating taxis with stickers should drop passengers at all sections.

‘Local taxis don’t just stop at the malls but should go around to all sections. Commuters should not be left on the road no matter which area they are going to.

‘Even if there is one person in a taxi they have the right to be dropped wherever they want to be without ill treatment by drivers,’ said Mbonambi.

He urged commuters to report poor service to the association.

‘Passengers must inform us so that we can deal with drivers who don’t comply with the regulation of the association.

Commuters must note the sticker numbers displayed inside all taxis or write down the number plates of those who mistreat them.

‘We will ensure guilty drivers are dealt with.’
