Protest against corruption in Zululand district

The protest was led by former Nongoma Mayor Jeremiah Mavundla, who is also a NFP MEC member

THE National Freedom Party staged a march to protest against the lack of service delivery and corruption in the Zululand district in Ulundi on Tuesday morning.

The protest was led by former Nongoma Mayor Jeremiah Mavundla, who is also a NFP MEC member.

Mavundla said corruption was rife in the Zululand District Municipality.

‘We decided to march to the district municipality offices to hand over a memorandum of grievances after numerous complaints from the public about high levels of corruption and lack of service delivery in this region.

‘Water delivery especially has become a serious challenge for our people. Water tankers are no longer delivering.

‘Water infrastructure has also been neglected and workers are struggling to keep up with maintenance because they do not have vehicles to go out to their jobs,’ said Mavundla.

He further noted that the installation of toilets was abandoned after the municipality failed to pay contractors.

‘The councillors are not even communicating with the community to keep them informed about key issues.’

The NFP handed over their memorandum to KZN Democratic Alliance leader, Zwakele Mncwango.

Mncwango said he was invited by the NFP to accept the memorandum as they are in a coalition partnership with the IFP.

‘It is the fact that we supported the IFP in the election of office bearers and it is also true that the IFP cannot pass the budget without our support.

‘It is for that reason we as the DA came to listen to the people.

‘We believe that when the community raises concerns, we must listen. We will have a meeting with the IFP leadership to discuss these grievances,’ said Mncwango.

ZDM Mayor Thulasizwe Buthelezi confirmed that corruption was a problem.

‘That is the reason why we have instituted forensic investigations. When we took over this municipality in 2016 we discovered that a lot of corrupt activities were taking place.’
