Good turnout for voter roll registration

Removal of posters fails to discourage voters

DESPITE the removal of voter registration posters in Ngwelezana, the potential voters did not disappoint.

They turned out in large numbers to register and check their addresses.

This was the observation of Ngwelezana and Ward 28 Councillor Madlinyoka Ntanzi.

Ntanzi was speaking to the Zululand Observer at Ngwelezana Civic Centre, where he was checking his name and address on the voter’s roll.

‘We were disturbed when we saw our election posters as the ANC, being removed from the street poles in the township.

‘We can’t point fingers at opposition parties for this, because there is a possibility of criminal element as well.

‘We thought this was going to have a negative effect on the turnout, but the electorate came to all the voting centres.

These centres are in Thanduyise High School, Ngwelezana Hospital, Bomvini and here at the Civic Centre.

‘We also used our loud-hailing system, encouraging residents to come to all the voting centres, as was required by the Independent Election Commission.

‘We are impressed with how people responded. Even though we don’t have the numbers now, but this was a good exercise, good for democracy,’ he said.

Ntanzi’s sentiments were echoed by IEC Supervisor at Ngwelezana Civic Centre, Gcina Mkhwanazi, who said many people responded positively to their call.

‘Our mission was accomplished. The aim of this process was to verify the addresses of voters and registering new voters and people came for that. We registered both the adults and the youth between the ages of 16 and 17. We had first time voters and those with relocation issues. We were also happy with the atmosphere which was most peaceful, thanks to a well beefed-up security,’ she said.
