Blue lights, yellow lights – who can use what lights?

The use of identification lights is governed by the National Road Traffic Regulations and the SAPS has stipulated the following with regards to the legalities of vehicle lights.

Red lights can be used on vehicles that are: legal ambulances, fire-fighting vehicle, or rescue vehicles

It is important to note that the legal framework regarding identification lights and sirens is applicable to the vehicle and not to the person operating the vehicle.

Green lights – disaster management vehicles

A flashing orange light may only be used where a breakdown has occurred, where maintenance – or other work – or an inspection is being carried out, when a breakdown vehicle is towing a motor vehicle, or in the event of a vehicle carrying an abnormal load. Vehicles other than emergency vehicles or vehicles authorised by the relevant MEC in a province, may not be fitted with orange identification lights

For instance – should a designated official be using a different vehicle, they may not place the identification lights on said vehicle.

White lights can be displayed on vehicles owned by registered security service provider and driven by a security officer
