KZN Deeds Office reopens

Employees were striking over poor working conditions

THE Zululand Observer this morning (Thursday) received confirmation that the Deeds Office strike in Pietermaritzburg has come to an end, with services resuming as normal.

This after the Office of the Chief Registrar of Deeds’ Supply Chain Management section took over the procurement process and installation of air conditioning units.

Attorneys have been informed that, while there will be no execution this morning, deeds that were up for fees on 15 February, the day before the strike commenced, would be executed tomorrow.

An examination process will continue from this morning, but no monitoring will take place until the backlog has been addressed..

Employees at the deeds office downed tools on 16 February owing to poor working conditions.

Their grievances included dysfunctional air conditioning units and a leaking and cracked building, among other things.

The only deeds office in KZN, the strike brought the province’s property sales and purchases to a halt.
