PROTESTERS brought the Dumbe township to a standstill on Wednesday to voice their anger about the death of a man who was allegedly assaulted by Mayor Majuba Mavuso’s bodyguards at the beginning of the month.
Community members from three townships joined the protest following the news on Tuesday that the victim, Bongani Mthethwa (43) of Bilanyoni township, died from his injuries.
A community leader who asked not to be named, said on Wednesday residents from Prince Mangosuthu, Bilanyini and Tholakele townships blockaded the road with burning tyres and logs.
He said Mthethwa was among 16 men assaulted by the mayor’s guards during an earlier service delivery protest on 2 February.
Provincial chairperson of the ACDP Youth Foundation, Khaye Ndlovu, expressed concern that all school learners in the three townships were forced to abandon their classes to join this week’s protest.
Police spokesperson, Captain Nqobile Gwala, said no injuries were reported.
Eight suspects were arrest for public violence and will appear in court soon.
