Disabled left without accommodation as centre closes down
The provincial chairperson of the Association for the Physical Challenged (APC), Jane Chennels, said the 10 remaining residents who have not been allocated houses in Dumisani Makhaye Village were advised in November last year

JABULANI Centre, which caters for physical challenged residents in Nkwalini Valley, is closing down at the end of February.
The provincial chairperson of the Association for the Physical Challenged (APC), Jane Chennels, said the 10 remaining residents who have not been allocated houses in Dumisani Makhaye Village were advised in November last year.
‘For the past two years, residents were informed that the closure was imminent and attempts to find suitable alternative accommodation were unsuccessful.
‘It was suggested to these residents that they return to their family homes while waiting for houses to be found for them.

‘According to the Department of Human Settlements, houses for these residents should be ready later this year, but they have refused to move out of the centre,’ Chennels said.
She said numerous meetings have been held with the Department of Human Settlements, the Department of Social Development and municipal departmental representatives with regard to find temporary housing for these residents, but all efforts proved fruitless.
‘The residents cannot remain on the property owing to its deteriorated condition.
‘It has been condemned by the Department of Environmental Health and it is not a safe place to live, even temporarily.
‘Therefore, APC can no longer afford to keep Jabulani Centre open,’ she said.
