Versatile Phakamani on the move

Dynamite comes in small packages

PHAKAMANI Mthethwa is the perfect example of the adage ‘dynamite comes in small packages’, be it in sport, life ambitions and goals.

As a sportsman, the 28-year-old sales trainee at SA Breweries excels on the cricket pitch and hockey astroturf.

Popularly known as Phaks, the right-handed cricketer (batsman and spin bowler) has been playing for Felixton Cricket Club since 2008 and represented the uThungulu U18 team and competed at the SALGA Games in 2007 and 2008.

His best batting performance is 47 not out and his best bowling figures 3/7 in 2.5 overs, which he collected in a recent club match.

When it comes to hockey, Phaks has excelled both on and off the turf.

‘I joined the Empangeni Hockey Club two years ago and have represented the men’s Zululand A and B teams for the past four years, as well as the KZN Country District A and B teams (2014-2017) as a centre link,’ said Mthethwa.

He obtained his umpires Level 1 certificate and has coached at school and club level.

‘I coached the Empangeni Hockey Club women’s side for the first time last season and we managed to win the Zululand Club Hockey League.’

Phaks is the Zululand umpire co-ordinator.

‘I love to play squash when I get a gap and run 10km a day, three times a week to stay fit.’

He enjoys listening to music, hanging out with friends and family and competing in all sport codes in his free time.

He has set himself tough goals for 2018, which include making more runs and taking more wickets for his club, making the SA Country Districts team and going to an IPT tournament for hockey. He also wants to achieve his FIH Level umpiring qualification.

‘Personally I would also like to move up in the company where I work and am studying Customer Service Marketing through UNISA this year.’
