More rabid animals reported

The rabies report for week 13 to 19 January lists five dogs, one bovine and two mongooses

THE question residents of uMlalazi need to ask themselves is, ‘Are my dogs and cats vaccinated?.

‘If not, why not?’

This plea comes after the latest statistics have confirmed another case of rabies in the area.

The rabies report for week 13 to 19 January lists five dogs, one bovine and two mongooses.

Details are about dogs in eShowe town, Ballito, Tongaat, Mandeni and Sipofu in the Ugu disctrict.

The bovine was found in the Mapumulo area in the Ilembe district and the two mongooses in Pietermaritzburg and Greytown (Umvoti).

The Rabies Awareness Body in eShowe group says if an animal has not been vaccinated, they are breaking the law.

The owners are also putting themselves and their family at risk.

If anyone has been in contact with saliva by means of an animal bite or scratch, insist on post exposure prophylaxis (vaccination).

It is frightening that one of the oldest diseases still causes so many fatalities owing to a lack of awareness.

Rabies is the deadliest disease on earth.

The world has all the means to eradicate this disease – if only people knew about it and took the available preventative measures.

The #zeroby30 goal of the world health organisation (WHO) will only be achieved through diligent vaccination of dogs, and an educated population regarding rabies prevention.

It is a legal obligation of every pet owner to ensure their dogs and cats are vaccinated against rabies.
