EMPANGENI, Jozini, Emanguzi, Ulundi and Nongoma were among the areas in the province in which a total of 162 unlicensed firearms were recovered during a month-long provincial police operation held in December.

A total of 1 347 rounds of ammunition were recovered and 207 suspects arrested and charged for possession of unlicensed firearms.

All recovered firearms will be sent for ballistic testing to determine whether they were used in the commissioning of crimes.

Suspects appeared in different magistrates’courts throughout the province.

‘Our members will ensure that they eliminate the proliferation of illegal firearms in the country.

‘We urge community members to work together with police by reporting people who may have unlicensed firearms in their possession,’ said KZN Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Bheki Langa.
