DESPITE the temperamental weather of late, local anglers experienced good times.
Deep sea anglers have had their hands full with dorado and tuna over the past few weeks.
Cape Vidal has been the place with the ‘golden water’.
Using lighter tackle with natural colour lures has been the secret to success.
For rock and surf fishermen, inedibles and summer game fish have been thick on the bite.
Hlobane and Mtunzini are the two current hot spots on the Zululand shoreline, producing a variety of monsters.
Wading into the treacherous Mtunzini waters and working the banks have resulted in huge diamond rays, blackfin sharks, giant kingfish, brown skates, honeycomb rays, giant guitar fish, grey sharks and shad coming out.
On the freshwater side of things, Jozini Dam has been producing a number of tiger fish in the 500g to 1.5kg region.
Sardine baits, live bait and fresh fillets have been the recipe for success.
When using live bait, use a short shank hook with a wider gape as oppose to a longer shank.
The longer shank hooks are used for tying fillets and bait onto where the length of the shank is useless when fishing live bait.
The wider gape also assists in hooking up with a live bait owing to most of the gape being taken up when hooking the live bait.
