AQUADENE Secondary School’s Bhekanani Cele wants to study medicine after obtaining seven distinctions in his final matric results.
Bhekanani (18), who was raised by his grandmother in Ingwavuma after his mother passed away when he was five years old, says he could not believe he had obtained top marks.
He received distinctions in Computer Applications Technology, Dramatic Arts, Life Sciences, Life Orientation, Mathematics, Physical Sciences and IsiZulu First Additional Language.

‘It has always been a dream to obtain such great results, and I did tell people at school this year that I would get seven distinctions. It was definitely a pleasant surprise that I was actually able to do it,’ he said.
Bhekananai said knowing where he comes from has always been his driving force in wanting to succeed.
‘We are all capable of achieving great things but it depends on our mentality. It is up to you and you must always ask yourself, where you are from and where are you going.
‘My family background always keeps me going,’ he said.
Although he managed to obtained great results in the end, he says it was not an easy matric year.
‘I knew I had to turn things around and really push hard during the trial exams.
‘Some friends and I formed a study group and we would study through the night sometimes. We continued that routine even in the final exams.
‘We also had the support of our teachers and for that I am thankful.’
