What type of person flings rubbish out of car windows?
Is it the same person who cruises through a red traffic light while talking on his phone?
Yes, it’s him and many others like him.
Chucking rubbish out of car windows seems to be Zululand drivers’ favourite pastime when behind the wheel.
Anything goes, from cans and bottles to nappies and half-eaten KFC box meals.
They don’t care who sees them or if there are cars behind them.
That and the total disregard for basic traffic rules are a clear indication that we are on a steady
course to becoming a proper African country, where lawlessness prevails and where it’s every man for himself.
Like everywhere else up north.
The most recent piece of trash I saw being flung out of a window was a truck driver’s leftover lunch in a polystyrene holder, which left yellow curry smears over my windscreen.
I’m not classifying the culprits, but there’s definitely a distinct pattern.
Maybe it’s because our roads are littered with busses and taxis but, then again, a McDonald’s
Happy Meal being shot from a ML’s window is also not uncommon.
It seems litter bugs are spread right across the class range and has perhaps more to do with
one’s background than one’s income.
At school, years ago, we were taught not to litter, but in this day and age enticing kids towards a 30% pass rate takes preference over everything else.
At least in 20 years’ time those same kids can use all the roadside junk to fill up giant potholes – in true African style.
