RBCS top achiever obtains 6 distinctions

The matriculant, who was doing nine subjects, said the results came as a surprise

HARD work and determination paid off for Richards Bay Christian School learner Ester Becker, who obtained six distinctions for her 2017 final matric exams.

Among thousands of IEB learners who received their results on Wednesday morning, Becker (18) matriculated top of her class with distinctions in Maths, Life Sciences, Accounting, IsiZulu, Afrikaans and Life Orientation.

The matriculant, who was doing nine subjects, said the results came as a surprise.

‘I was not expecting six distinctions especially because I had inflammation in my arm and I was not able to finish writing all my papers during the final exams.

‘I thought maybe I would get a distinction in Life Orientation, so this came as a surprise but I am very happy,’ she said.

Her proud mother Isabel Becker, who held back tears of joy, said Ester has always been a hard worker and had put her all into her school work.

‘I can’t even describe how happy I am. She studied very hard and would wake up at odd hours sometimes to study for her exams and I would constantly pray for her,’ Isabel said.

Ester has chosen to study teaching at the North West University’s Potchefstroom campus.

‘People often ask me why I want to study teaching when I have such great marks. Yes, I can go study medicine but I believe through teaching, I can help produce many doctors,’ she said.

She applauded her teachers for the support they gave her from the time she was in Grade 8 through to Grade 12.

‘My maths teachers particularly, have all been brilliant and they really pushed me and I am forever grateful for their guidance.’

Richards Bay Christian School principal Bev Chambler applauded Ester as well as the class of 2017 for achieving a 100% pass rate.

‘The matric results of 2017 reaffirm the school’s position to provide quality education, preparing students to write the IEB examinations since 2005.

‘The class of 2017 achieved a 100% pass rate, and 100% have qualified for tertiary studies. Also, 92% achieved a Bachelors Degree pass.

‘The results reflect the diversity of strengths within the group of students, with some outstanding results in the range of subjects,’ Chambler said.
