Beachgoers celebrate New Year’s Day at Alkantstrand
KZN MECs Zikalala and Kaunda visited Alkantstrand as part of a New Year's Day coastal tour
THOUSANDS of holidaymakers from around Zululand enjoyed a day of sun and sand at Alkantstrand in the blistering heat of New Year’s Day.
Among the visitors were MEC for Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs Sihle Zikalala, MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liason Mxolisi Kaunda, and King Cetshwayo Mayor Nonhle Mkhulise, ensuring tourists and local visitors enjoyed all the beach had to offer.
The New Year’s Day walkabout was part of a larger organised beach trip for the two MECs as they headed down the coast to Durban later in the day.

Members of SAPS and security companies worked hard to make sure everything was in order.
Traffic congestion on routes headed to the beach was as expected, as taxis, cars and busloads of visitors made their way through Richards Bay.
As the temperatures rose, so did tempers and there were complaints about insufficient policing of the traffic, and chaos at various intersections.
By the time of going to print, there had been no fatal car accidents reported.

In the run-up to the festive season, concerns over the provision of portable toilets were raised.
The City of uMhlathuze had, however, approved and made financial provision for 100 toilets to be delivered and distributed between Alkantstrand and the Bay Hall Area.
These were delivered on Friday, in time for the New Year festivities.
