Irresponsible croc feeding leads to St Lucia slipway closure
The decision was made after numerous people thought it alright to feed wild crocodiles after dark
ST LUCIA’S Sugarloaf slipway and jetty have, with immediate effect and until further notice, been closed to the public from 6pm to 6am.
Local conservation authorities were forced to take the decision after at least one person was caught on video feeding the crocodiles from the slipway, standing just metres from more than one reptile.
Despite signs enforcing the ‘no feeding of wild animals’ rule, this festive season saw, on one occasion, more than 10 vehicles lined up at the slipway apparently waiting to take part in this seemingly new phenomenon.
iSimangaliso Wetland Park, Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife and the St Lucia Ratepayers Association teamed up to install chains and signs at the entrance to the slipway area, and danger tape barricading off the actual slipway.
The evening closure of Sugarloaf slipway and jetty will be reassessed once the festive season is over.
