MEC Kaunda urges police to be tough on traffic offenders

Scores of people were arrested from 24-26 December for various offences including drinking and driving and overspending

The KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Mr. Mxolisi Kaunda, has commended the police for intensifying law enforcement operations over the long weekend.

Scores of people were arrested from 24-26 December for various offences including drinking and driving and overspending.

“We would like to commend the police for their sterling work and urge them to continue with these operations, which are clearly yielding positive results,” said Kaunda.

Along the N3 in eNtshongweni, police arrested two speedsters who were traveling at 214 and 223 kilometres per hour, respectively. The suspects were granted bail are expected to appear in court this week.

A number of drinking and driving cases were also reported elsewhere, with the highest being seven times over the limit.  “We have continued with our “zero tolerance” approach to excessive speeding and drinking and driving, specifically. Speedsters and drunk drivers will face the full might of the law.

This is not to say we are ignoring other offences – make no mistake all traffic offenders and  criminal offences are being attended to with the same resolve,” said Kaunda.

Kaunda said that police will sustain these operations particularly in areas of entertainment as the province is also hosting a number of music festivals during this period.

Yesterday (Wednesday), Kaunda lead a law enforcement operation in Newcastle as the town hosted the Amcor Dam Music Festival. “We are going to sustain these operations beyond the festive season, because we want to save lives and ensure that KwaZulu-Natal reduces the number of crashes and fatalities during this period,” said Kaunda.

He further called on all road users to exercise caution and abide by the road traffic signs and rules as many holiday makers are returning home and traffic volumes have naturally increased. Earlier today, the traffic count in Mtunzini and Oribi toll plazas was over 2000 cars per hour.

“We call upon motorists to tolerate one another, remain patient and vigilant as well as cooperate with law enforcement officials since road safety is a collective responsibility,” said Kaunda.
