THUTHUKANI Special School were recently placed second and third in the provincial round of the National Teachers Awards in the Primary School Principal and LSEN teaching categories respectively.
The school entered the National Teachers Awards in 2016 for the first time.
Principal Marthie Combrinck entered the section for Principals of Primary Schools and the team entered the section for Excellence in Special Needs Education.
Both teams won the regional section and then went on to represent Thuthukani at provincial level.
Combrinck finsihed second in her section and the team third.
Acting Deputy Principal, Tanya Girvin, said it was an honour for the school to have achieved such recognition.
‘It took a lot of effort and hard work to prepare for the competition. We learned a lot from each other and we once again realised that the work we do at Thuthukani is a calling.
‘Each staff member has the needs of the learners with intellectual disability as their first and foremost motivation in every task that we do at our school.
‘We are all especially proud of our principal, whose dedication, hard work and management style keeps us all on our toes, but happy and proud of the work we do every day for the disabled children in our care,’ Girvin said.
‘I would like to take this opportunity to thank the community of Zululand for their continued support of our school and the work we do.
‘Please consider making a donation towards the education of children with intellectual disability at our school.’
