SASSA moves on grant backlogs

The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) in KZN has stepped up to address the backlog of application renewals regarding disability grant beneficiaries

THE South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) in KZN has stepped up to address the backlog
of application renewals regarding disability grant beneficiaries.
This was revealed by provincial SASSA spokesperson Vusi Mahaye. Mahaye said the deployment of doctors to assess applications at various SASSA district offices in the province, has been completed.
‘We expect doctors to now start conducting assessments on disabled people who have applied
for disability grant renew als.
‘Since the introduction of the policy prohibiting government employees from doing business with
the State, we were forced to request the services of doctors from other provinces who are not
working in government hospitals.
‘I can confirm that doctors have now been deployed at various district offices, but I don’t have a
specific date as to when district offices will deploy surgeons to various local offices to begin with the
assessments,’ he said.
A senior official from the Ulundi district office confirmed that doctors were available.
‘We are busy with our deployment as we speak.
I can’t say when exactly they will resume their duties, but the backlog will be completed before the
end of January.’
However SASSA offices in Nkandla, Richards Bay and Lower Umfolozi were unaware of the approvals of district surgeons.
‘We are in the dark about the issue. We are still waiting for information from our head office,
but the backlog is growing daily,’ said one senior staff member in the Rich ards Bay office.
