PIONEERS of Empangeni’s A Rank Taxi Association were honoured last week for their dedication in serving the taxi industry under trying circumstances.
Speaking at the association’s year-end function, Chairperson Vusi Mthiyane said it was with both joy and sadness that those who showed the way in putting Empangeni’s taxi industry on a map, were being honoured.
‘We are happy to be awarding certificates to long-serving members of this association, but we are also sad that some of them are not with us. These are the people who sacrificed their lives. They were the trendsetters and we still seek advice from those in retirement.
‘Even though the industry is not doing so well because of the flat economy, we still have people who wake up every morning to serve our commuters and we are grateful for that,’ he said.
Among the retired taxi operators honoured were Dolly Mthethwa, Smangele Mathula, Mfundisi Fakude and Aaron Majola.
The event was also attended by representatives of the South African National Taxi Council (SANTACO).
