Call for Empangeni CPF

Empangeni residents, especially the youth, have been called on to start a Community Policing Forum (CPF) to assist security companies and the police in the area

EMPANGENI residents, especially the youth, have been called on to start a Community Policing Forum (CPF) to assist security companies and the police in the area.

This was revealed during a public crime meeting held in Empangeni last week, where Empangeni Station Commander, Brigadier Jeros Thango, made a public announcement that he would personally join the CPF in Empangeni and assist in any way possible.

Thango’s sentiments were expressed following a statement by a resident Kevin Sukreben, who raised concerns over the absence of an Empangeni CPF.

‘Empangeni currently does not have a CPF and that is my worry. We used to have one, but that was dissolved by one of your predecessors,’ said Sukreben.

Thango concurred, noting that it needs to be addressed.

‘Our Constitution states that each area should have a CPF. Our neighbourhood watches form part of the CPFs and we as the police need to be in constant communication with them.

‘They need to hold the SAPS accountable. We are mandated to protect the community and CPFs form part of our crime prevention structures.

‘I will join the CPF if one is started up in Empangeni,’ Thango pledged.

Meanwhile, Larry Erasmus of Security Group emphasised that the youth need to start involving themselves in the fight against crime.

‘It’s sad to see that we don’t have the younger generation here. Why are they not participating in fighting crime?’ asked Erasmus.

His sentiments were echoed by Wynand Swart of Tracker SA.

‘Where are the youngsters? When the adults are not at home, the kids are and they should be involved in crime prevention and should be aware of what is going on.’

The ZO are in talks with the relevant stakeholders regarding the formation of an Empangeni CPF and will keep the public informed about meetings which will be held in the New Year.
