Police roadblocks yield fruitful results

A large number of traffic fines were issued during roadblocks around Zululand over the weekend

POLICE visibility at major intersections assisted in the maintenance of law and order over the weekend in Zululand.

Roadblocks, crime squads’ patrols and stop-search operations set up across the region not only had a positive effect in curbing the crime wave but resulted in some arrests.

Police arrested a 37-year-old man after they confiscated a homemade firearm and ammunition from his vehicle during a roadblock at Ingulule Reserve near Gingindlovu on Sunday morning.

The man is currently detained at Mtunzini SAPS holding cells and will apply for bail this week.

Meanwhile eSikhaleni police arrested a man driving under the influence of alcohol and also issued a large number of traffic fines during their operation.

‘We closed all township exits to ensure offenders had no escape. We will continue to conduct the stop and searches throughout the festive season and ensure the safety of residents,’ said eSikhawini SAPS Colonel GV Mthimkhulu.

‘We will continue to work with the Traffic Department, and those driving drunk and without licenses will be put behind bars. We want to ensure that criminals will have no chance to engage in unlawful activities during the jolly period,’ he said.

The King Cetshwayo SAPS Cluster Spokesperson, Capt Mbongeni Mdlalose, said police will be deployed in crime hotspots and in urban shopping areas.

‘We have other units such as the Public Order Police and National Intervention Unit (NIU) working with us to limit any criminal activities in the area. We want this to be a crime free festive season,’ he said.

Mdlalose also appealed to Zululand communities to report any criminal activities to their nearest police station.
