Local sea scouts help the needy

AFTER participating in the National Cub Challenge, the 1st Richards Bay Sea Scouts group collected and made 55 ‘bags of joy’ for distribution to the needy this festive season.

With the slogan ‘Kind is the new cool’, this year’s National Cub Challenge included an anti-bullying campaign and at the 1st Richards Bay Sea Scouts’ year-end function, a LifeLine Zululand representative addressed the children about the realities of bullying.

Throughout the campaign cubs and scouts nationwide learnt what bullying is, why it is wrong, and who to speak to in the event of bullying taking place.

The 12 Bay cubs did outstandingly well with their 55 bags of joy, each containing toothpaste, soap and other basic hygiene items for needy people.

The 1st Richards Bay Sea Scouts was founded in 1976 and it remains an active, vibrant scouting group.

Scouting emphasises the lifelong values of service, personal growth and achievement, which include honour, helpfulness and loyalty.

Benefits of scouting include self-confidence, outdoor know-how, teamwork and acceptance of responsibility.

Cubs (boys and girls from seven to 11 years old) meet on Tuesdays from 6 to 7.30pm.

Scouts (boys and girls 10 to 18 years) meet on Wednesdays from 6 to 8pm.
