Mtubatuba municipality strike called off

Last week employees threatened to go on a full-blown strike on Friday, complaining about salary grades, tender irregularities and the deterioration of their work stations

MTUBATUBA Municipal Manager Joconia Mngomezulu has blamed the town’s previous administration for discrepancies which caused workers to threaten going on strike.

Last week employees threatened to go on a full-blown strike on Friday, complaining about salary grades, tender irregularities and the deterioration of their work stations.

Mngomezulu admitted the grievances were legitimate, but said the problem started three years ago during the previous administration’s tenure.

‘The main challenge is salary grades. We discovered that some of the lower grade staff members were earning more than their seniors.

‘I was not here when these discrepancies occurred,’ Mngomezulu said. ‘It is also true that their workshops are in a bad state, especially when it rains.’.

He said both parties agreed to form a task team to discus and resolve the issues.

‘The task team will present the resolutions to a full Council meeting for approval.’

Shop steward Nkosinathi Mthiyane confirmed that the strike was called off after the meeting.

‘The municipality promised to rectify all the mistakes, so we will hold back on the strike.

‘We could not discuss the issue of alleged double tenders as one of the companies has taken the matter to court,’ Mthiyane said.
