New state-of-the-art library for needy Jozini community

It is hoped the library will establish a culture of learning in Manyiseni community

UNDER the banner of the Mzansi Libraries Online Project, the community of Manyiseni near Jozini now has access to a state-of-the-art community library to the value of R45-million.

The library was officially opened earlier this month, and it is thought it will help eliminate poverty and encourage a culture of learning.

Manyiseni Library is one of 44 in the province benefiting from the Mzansi project.

The project includes planning, design and construction of the library, as well as the provision of equipment, furniture and staffing allocations.

The Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) equipment was supplied by the National Library of South Africa using funding from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation’s Global Libraries project.

The size of a library is determined by the number of people who would use it, and Manyiseni Library is set to serve the needs of more than 28 000 people and nine schools.

‘Libraries are agents of change in society, they afford communities with equitable access to quality information, help improve pass rates through the provision of adequate study material, and provide space for gaming and early childhood development,’ said KZN Arts and Culture MEC Bongiwe Sithole-Moloi.

‘They serve a vital role in helping develop communities.

‘We reiterate the call for communities to look after these facilities as they are investments that aim to address socio-economic challenges.’
