STRIVING to put an end to lives lost as a result of domestic violence, local support centre Reaching Out has planned numerous events to create awareness during the 16 Days of Activism Campaign which starts on Monday.
The campaign runs from 25 November to 10 December and is a global campaign aimed at generating an increased awareness of the negative impact of violence on women, children as well as society.
This year, Reaching Out’s office manager Purity Madlalose says the focus is on paying tribute to all the children who have lost their lives through violence and encouraging those still trapped in homes where domestic violence and abuse are prevalent, to seek help.
‘We will launch the campaign with a candle lighting ceremony on Monday with local television station, 1KZN TV and on 30 November we are hosting a Community Family Fun Day.
‘The fun day incorporates a host of activities, from a 3.2km peace walk around the Richards Bay CBD, sound off competition, art exhibition, children’s entertainment, jumping castles, food and craft stalls, sport demos, wellness services, local dance and musical entertainment and legal advice,’ Madlalose said.
The public can still purchase the white and purple awareness ribbons which symbolise the wearers’ commitment to refrain from acts of violence and report incidences they witness.
