Attacker ends in hospital after being stabbed by victim

The woman who was assaulted turned the tables on her attacker and stabbed him in the chest

A STABBING incident in Meerensee on Monday left a robber in a critical condition and under police guard in hospital after his victim turned the tables on him.

The 18-year-old, who cannot be named as he is yet to make his first court appearance, is facing a charge of assault common after he allegedly assaulted a 31-year-old woman and her friend.

The incident occurred at about 5pm in the vicinity of Davidson Lane at Alkantstrand in Meerensee.

According to police reports, two suspects attacked the woman and her friend with bottles and stones before stealing her handbag.

The woman then retaliated and stabbed one of the suspects in the chest with a pair of nail clippers.

She was detained but not charged at the time as she was intoxicated.

Meditrax Ambulance Service arrived on scene and treated the male suspect for a collapsed lung, but was unable to transport the patient to hospital and was forced to wait three hours – while continuously treating the critical patient – for an ambulance to arrive.

KZN EMS reportedly had no available ambulances and eventually Netcare transported the ailing suspect to Ngwelezana Hospital.

Richards Bay SAPS Communications Officer, Captain Debbie Ferreira, confirmed one case of assault common has been opened against the stab victim, while a case of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm was opened against the woman.

Police urge people to be vigilant at all times, especially with the upcoming festive season, and to keep themselves and their valuables out of harm’s way.

‘When people go to the beach, they should take only what they need while at the beach – no extra money they won’t spend and also ensure they leave their valuables at home,’ said Capt Ferreira.

Other general safety tips include never walking alone, not talking to strangers, walking in well-lit, busy streets and in a group when possible. Always let someone know when and where you are going, and know all emergency numbers.
