TWO suspects believed to be responsible for the killing of Mbongolwane police Constable Jabulani Mavundla last Wenesday, have been arrested.
They were apprehended in eSikhaleni on Sunday morning together with their uncle, who allegedly picked them up in eShowe and hid them in eSikhaleni.
Police spokesperson Captain Mbongeni Mdlalose confirmed the arrests.
The three suspects appeared in the eSikhaleni Magistrate’s Court on Monday facing charges of being possession of illegal firearms and ammunition. They were remanded in custody for further investigation.
The two to be charged for murder, attempted murder and robbery are expected to appear in eShowe Magistrate Court on Monday.
‘Two of the suspects were positively linked to the murder of Constable Mavundla,’ Mdlalose said.
‘Two service pistols together the R5 Rifle belonging to Mavundla were recovered from the suspects during the arrest.’
According to Mdlalose, Mavundla was on his way back to the Mbongolwane police station after attending to a robbery case at Maqhogo with his colleague when they were attacked.
‘Mavundla lost control of the vehicle after being shot and the vehicle crashed against nearby trees.
He was declared dead and his colleague was rushed to hospital for treatment.’
