Goodbye to Industrial Age thinking

Consultant gives advice on how to fulfil employee needs for a productive workplace

THE days where employees put their nose to the grindstone for the sole purpose of generating an income are over.

This is according to Durban business consultancy firm Gold Digger owner Mike Ivey, speaking at a Capitec Bank business breakfast on Wednesday in Richards Bay regarding the growing trend for workers to seek more reward for their work than financial remuneration.

‘We’re moving away from the Industrial Age where the thinking used to be ‘just do your piece of the work and you’ll get your pay’, says Ivey.

‘All employees have six basic needs – certainty is one of them, but uncertainty is too.

‘This is a paradox, but truthfully we wouldn’t for instance watch the rugby after finding out what the score is,’ Ivey said.

He also highlighted the significance for people to feel a sense of growth, belonging, contribution and legacy in the work they do.

The combination of these factors infuses self-belief, which Ivey indicated reinforces confidence and improves overall work performance.

‘If you as an employer give your employees meaning in their jobs by continuing to look for opportunities that will help them grow or occasionally changing their work environment for a happy experience, they will ultimately perform better,’ said Ivey.
