THE grieving family of Asanda Mbuyazi, who was murdered by her boyfriend, is not satisfied with the sentence handed down to her killer.
Mbuyazi (20) from the Ndlabeyilandula area in KwaMbonambi, was stabbed 20 times by Siyabonga Zungu (20) following a paternity argument over their child in May. Her decomposed body was found in the bush not far from her home after a week’s search.
Zungu was sentenced to 18 years imprisonment in the Ngwelezana Regional Court.
A family member, Lindiwe Mashinini (44), told the ZO the sentence was too lenient.
‘As a family we feel that justice was not served. We expected a life sentence. Zungu confessed that he raped my niece before tying her against a tree and stabbing her, so in our mind the court failed us.

Mashinini said the family is still traumatised as they believe that Zungu’s family was aware of the death of her niece.
‘A traditional healer testified in court that he was hired by Zungu’s family to cleanse Siyabonga after killing Asanda.’
KZN spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority, Natasha Kara, said the family needs to approach the office of the Director of Public Prosecution to make a presentation, motivating why they feel the sentence must be appealed. The NPA will look into the matter and determine if there are grounds for appeal,’ Kara said.
