NUM backs Ramaphosa for President of the ANC

Union elects new KZN leadership

THE KZN National Union of Mine Workers (NUM) has vowed to campaign tirelessly for ANC Deputy President, Cyril Ramaphosa to become the next President of the ANC at the upcoming national conference in December.

This was one of the resolutions taken during the KZN NUM Provincial Conference held last week at uMhlathuze Auditorium in Richards Bay, at which a new leadership was elected.

Speaking to the Zululand Observer, newly elected KZN Regional Secretary Muzi Zakwe said his union has not deviated from its mother body’s position.

‘We are merely re-affirming and endorsing Congress of South African Trade Union (COSATU) Central Executive Committee’s resolution, to have Ramaphosa succeeding President Zuma.

‘We see nothing wrong with Ramaphosa’s candidature, and our feeling is that the country will be in safe hands under his impeccable leadership,’ he said.

Ramaphosa and former AU Chairperson Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma are front runners in the race for the ANC’s top job.

Held under the theme, ‘building a stronger NUM to unite, recruit and retain members’, the conference raised concern about the high levels of retrenchment in the mining, energy and construction sectors.

‘We are also concerned about our members’ health, safety and the attitude of employers, which has contributed to a number of injuries and fatalities in the region.

‘We call on the Department of Labour to act on these employers who are negligent, and impose heavy fines.

‘We are therefore going to fight these brutal employers who are subjecting our members to poverty.

‘Unemployment has a huge impact on social issues we are confronted with, as a country and as a province. We are also calling for stringent measures to save our country’s economy with a view to creating more employment,’ he said.

The other elected members of the KZN NUM leadership are: Musa Goqo as Chairperson, Mandla Zulu as Deputy Chairperson, Muzi Zakwe as Secretary, Khulekani Ntuli as Deputy Secretary, Jennifer Khanyile as Treasurer, Sipho Mungwe on Health and Safety, Sipho Dube as Deputy Secretary on Health and Safety, Themba Nkosi as Education Deputy and M Qwabe as Education Deputy secretary.
