AFTER no less than 27 years of local service to Empangeni High School, principal Zelma Matthee bade the school and ‘her’ pupils farewell on Wednesday.
Mrs Matthee joined the school in 1990 as a maths teacher, but was quickly promoted to HOD for maths, and then deputy principal in 2002.
She became acting principal in 2008, and was formally appointed as head of the school in 2009.
‘Under her capable leadership and guidance, EHS has continued to grow, achieving tremendous milestones in all academic, cultural and sports fields,’ said school spokesperson Julie da Silva, on behalf of the teaching faculty.
‘She placed the educational needs of all learners first, and built and managed a team of dedicated teachers
‘Her commitment to EHS is admirable and on her retirement she will definitely be leaving some massive shoes to be filled!’
